This gentle 1.7-kilometer loop trail (1.2-miles) starts from the group campground area at Twin Peaks Campground and ventures up a small ridge with spectacular sunset views over the Sonoyta Valley and Ajo Range.
Interpretive signs identify the plants that grow along the track, especially different varieties of cacti that waved their prickly arms in the soft evening breeze when we walked this trail. Bathed first in the warm, soft glow of the golden hour and then painted in the customary mauve and purple shades of the blue hour, the desert scenery on this little walk was truly spectacular.
To make the most of the wonderful sunset colors, start this hike at least 30 minutes before sunset. That gives you plenty of time to admire the desert flora in the changing light as the trail gradually gains a little elevation.
When you reach the top, the Cubabi Mountains in Mexico will stand in sharp relief on the horizon and glow in the fieriest shades of purple and red.
