The Devils Garden Loop Trail was our favourite walk in Arches National Park because, unlike the more common short walks in the park, the full Devils Garden circuit makes for a very adventurous 3-hour hike. Most visitors walk to Landscape Arch and turn back, but if you don’t mind a more challenging tour, you can continue along the primitive trail into an area called “Devils Garden”.
In this backcountry part of the park, the trail, in a maze-like fashion, winds through rock fins, canyons and arches – magical rock formations, like Double O Arch, the Dark Angel monolith and Fin Canyon that truly give the impression of having stumbled upon an otherworldly garden made of fiery red stone, and a very pretty one at that.
Maybe most of all, we enjoyed hiking in perfect solitude for most of the way, which is something you won’t enjoy on any of the other maintained trails in Arches National Park.
I wholeheartedly recommend this hike, but anyone with little hiking experience might struggle to navigate the trail in some places, where the rock cairns that mark the trail are placed quite far apart. Download the gpx file in this post for offline use, so you won’t go off track. Also, those with a fear of heights may find some sections of this trail, like walking along narrow ledges with steep drop-offs on either side, quite daunting. If you feel uncomfortable, turn back.
And take plenty of water because there’s none to be found anywhere along the track.
